Military Gap-Crossing Bridges

1. ​Tactical Bridge-Ⅱ What is Military Gap-Crossing Bridges system development?

It is a temporary bridge that is quickly installed on broken bridges or ravines in wartime to move tanks, etc., and is operated without contact with the enemy but under the threat of howitzers. The Army's mobility support activities, which enable tactical and operational maneuvers of mobile units while overcoming various gaps (canyons, bridges destroyed by the enemy) that limit friendly forces' mobility, are important elements of decisive integrated operations, and are an important element of integrated operations according to the operational plan. Securing tactical bridge-II bridge assets that meet regional operational concepts and required capabilities is an essential weapon system for Korea military.

ChungAmEnC was recognized by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and related organizations for its excellent technology and business development management capabilities, and was selected as a preferred negotiation company in August 2022, and was awarded the Defense Defense Contract in December of that year. We plan to complete the system development project by 2026 by signing a contract with the business office as the lead company. Through this,Army We will complete the tactical bridge-II military development, which has been a long-awaited project of the engineers. In addition, partner institutions/companies comprised of experts in the field include Hyundai Everdigm, Korea Construction Research Institute, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Dankook University, Army Association Ground Forces Research Institute etc., and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. It is being developed under control, and is being developed through technical collaboration of steel materials and vehicles suitable for tactical bridge-II from POSCO and Kia Motors' military special vehicle division.

2. ​What is the core technology of ‘long-span high-strength bridge design technology for mobile vehicles’?

A bridge that is quickly installed on broken bridges or ravines in wartime to move tanks, etc. is a temporary bridge that is in contact with the enemy and is operated under the threat of direct fire/howitzer fire.stormThis is the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB).  

Through core technology research and development ordered by the Defense Technology Promotion Research Institute, we are researching and developing bridge assemblies, a core technology, to increase the MLC (Military Load Classification) of assault bridges and expand construction length, and to develop future bridge tank-II systems and We will contribute to the development of gap-overcoming equipment for armored vehicles. It was selected as a preferred negotiation company in July 2023, and in December of that year, it signed a contract with the Agency for Defense Development as the lead company, with plans to complete core technology projects by 2026. Collaborating institutions/companies comprised of experts in the field are being developed jointly with INHA University, MYUNGJI University.

3.  ​What is the 'Logistics Support Bridge - II'?

During World War II, Sir Donald Bailey of the United Kingdom developed a military bridge for transporting military supplies, which became widely utilized worldwide and was named the Bailey Bridge. The South Korean military inherited the M2 Long Span Assembly Bridge (Bailey Bridge) from the U.S. military during the Korean War and has been operating it to this day. It is primarily used for transporting military supplies and semi-permanently restoring damaged bridges in rear areas.

To ensure sustained operations for maneuver units during wartime and to address non-combat threats such as disasters during peacetime, outdated long-span assembly bridges need to be replaced with logistics support bridges, which enhance operational and usage efficiency. As a long-span assembly bridge, the logistics support bridge is designed to transition tactical bridges to the frontlines, maintain supply routes to ensure operational continuity and support maneuver units. It also facilitates the rapid restoration of supply routes and provides emergency bridge installations in civilian areas affected by disasters.

POSCO and ChungamEnC are conducting and completing preliminary research to enhance domestic technological maturity, thereby contributing to the military’s modernization efforts.
